Blame it on Hollywood's ability to romanticize seemingly mundane things, but I've always regretted that I didn't live in a city big enough to have roving hot dog carts (none that I've ever seen anyway).
This Friday, though, I came a little closer to that dream than I ever have. I was in downtown Lexington for lunch and ended up in a place that I must have walked by a thousand times without ever noticing: Sam's Hot Dogs.
Sam's is a little hole-in-the wall hot dog place across from the courthouse. I got a hot dog with everything on it (everything here being mustard, ketchup, sour kraut, relish, onions, cheese, and chili). It was awesome. To make it even better, I was with Sara and we ate our dogs outside on a park bench. I know hot dogs and park benches are silly things to get excited about, but I loved it - and now am looking for any excuse I can to find myself back downtown for lunch.
Everybody has hole-in-the-wall restaurants they love. Since I didn't know about Sam's, it's conceivable that I've never heard of your favorite greasy-spoon either. So educate me! Tell me what out-of-the-way diners and hidden pizza joints you like to visit. I promise I won't tell anybody else. It'll just be our secret.

Sam's is a great place..I'm glad you found it.
Two places that I eat at from time to time that are kind of more neighborhood places are Malibu Pub and Winchell's.
Malibu Pub has the best burger in town. It's a big 1/2 pounder with swiss, cheddar, and beer cheese!
Winchell's is probably my favorite all around restaurant in town. Every thing there is good. Their breakfast is awesome and their macaroni and cheese is the best I've ever had.
Wow. I LOVE Sam's!
I'm not familiar enough with Lexington to have any hole-in-the-walls, but on really nice days, EKU has a hot dog vendor out. And y'know... that's cool...
Man, I'm totally the last guy on the Sam's bandwagon.
I'm not a big Thai fan but I love Pad Thai in Tates Creek center. Noodles, sprouts, chicken, eggs, nuts and your choice of mild, medium or hizzzzzyot!
Oh, and THE best egg roll in town!
And Patch, it's even more awesome that your courageous enough to own up to loving to spend time with your lady on a park bench enjoying your time together. Keep setting a great example!
Thanks Chris. Ever since that sex message where Fred said you shouldn't do anything with your girlfriend that you wouldn't do on a park bench, we've decided to spend all of our time on park benches just to be safe...
Pad Thai is awesome. Planet Thai on Nicholasville Rd is also good. Except there they make fun of you if you order mild.
And while it's not a hole-in-the-wall, last night I ate at my favorite restaurant in Lexington - Tandoor. I love that place, but only eat there once every couple of months because it makes me so full that I'm miserable afterwards.
If you want the best Thai food in the state...it's Thai Smile in Frankfort.
It's been praised by strong critics of Thai food and by my friends who lived in Thiland for a few years. And, it' right next door to a Big Lots! What more could you want? Well, don't let that their discount neighbors keep you from easily the best Thai food you'll ever had. Also, if you ever want to have lunch there, just give me a call.
Sam's Hot Dogs are incredible.
The one place that I loved was Bearno's Pizza. They had the best pizza buffet in town. Sadly, however, it went out of business several months ago. Now, I'm stuck with Pizza Hut and Brooklyn Pizza.
I'm pretty okay with being "stuck" with Brooklyn Pizza..... :)
