When Lin named a Steve Taylor song by name in the comment section of my "When Heroes Collide" post it sent my brain tumbling down memory lane back to the days of my un-jaded youth when I was a Christian music devotee.
My past affiliation with Christian music will come as a surprise to some, specifically Chris Thorne as he has taken great pleasure on more than one ocassion in pointing out that I have no Christian music on my iPod. I'm not sure what the absence of such tunes says about me. I'll leave that to someone else to figure out. For the time being, though, I thought I'd reminisce a little in front of you all - take a little stroll through my musical memories of days gone by. I do so with the same slight embarrassment that anyone would feel recounting their musical taste from decades past.
The first concert I ever went to was a Christian concert. It was a guy named Greg X Volz. He used to be the lead singer for Petra. I had his first album, "The River is Rising" on audio tape. I remember him rocking the long hair in spite of his receding hairline and thinking "There's a guy who loves the rock." He was like a Christian David Lee Roth. With less Spandex.
From Greg X Volz I graduated into a lot of the Christian rock staples of my day, your Petras, your Whitehearts, your Bryan Duncans. But I also listened to a lot of what were considered "edgier" Christian acts (I'm fully aware of the irony, thanks). One of my favorite of which was a band called The Altar Boys. They were a Christian punk band. Kinda. They wore leather, chains, and had really big hair. I guess they looked a little more like a hair band than a punk band, but hey, it was the 80's everybody used hairspray back then. I liked the Altar Boys so much that a couple of my friends and I dressed up as them for Halloween one year.
I can remember being at some small Christian rock concert in Louisville one night and the opening act was this rap group called DC Talk. At the time nobody had ever heard of them. A friend and I stood in the lobby of a high school gym and talked to them for about an hour one night. The next summer we hung out with them at Ichthus for an afternoon. They got kind of big after that (relatively speaking) and forgot our names thus ending my brief encounter with Christian fame. I wonder what ever became of those guys...
I was also into a lot of the alternative Christian bands like The Choir, Adam Again, and the 77's. Towards the end of my high school career a group of guys from a handful of these bands got together and formed a "supergroup" called The Lost Dogs. I think they still perform (minus the deceased leader of Adam Again, Gene Eugene). They had kind of an alt-country vibe that was virtually unheard of in Christian music at the time. They were actually pretty awesome.
There were more. Tons more. Rick Cua, Steve Taylor, P.O.D., Russ Taff, the late great Rich Mullins.... I could go on and on, but I'm sure you're all probably already bored with my fit of nostalgia.
How about you, though? Did you listen to any Christian music in the 80's and 90's? I know Lin was a Steve Taylor fan. What did you guys listen to? What am I missing out on now by not following Christian music in the year 2007?

Oh my, I was so into Christian music in the 90's. My first concert for me was Rich Mullins. I was a Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, and Rich Mullins. Oo, oo, Gotta bring in the yellow stripped spandex guys "STYPER". Loved those guys. I remember them being played mainstream on MTV. Now that was really awesome.
Oh well, would I want to go back? Naw not really. I like the David Crowder, Chris Thomlin stuff. My ipod is filled with those two mostly. I still have my Jesus Freak on there too (Just for old time sake). Oh and by the way....I would not be caught dead with "Friends are Friends forever". Yikes!!
Tootles,
Steve White
Ha! I was at KCC one Summer and they officially burned "Friends Are Friends Forever" because it was so overplayed at the end of every week of camp. Hilarious.
My first Christian music experience was BJ Thomas. My dad's girlfriend had a tape and played it going to and from the lake in the summers. It can really take me back to those days when I hear it. These days since I love heavy metal, I love 3rd day. I love anything that Jason sings. It can be a hymn and with his spin on it, it's rockin for me. I love it.
OK... I'll answer the question honestly, but I always get laughed at for the music I listen to. I'm not a band person... never have been much of one. I listen to classical music, orchestra music (elevator music), musical theater kind of stuff.
So, in spring of 1986 when I truly accepted Christ, Praise and Worship music was brand new. It was difficult to find it, but Maranatha Music had a few albums.... In Moments Like These, Open My Eyes... these were songs that I loved to listen to playing on the local Christian radio station. Artists like Steve Green and Sandi Patti were also my favorites. I still love to hear my recording of him singing "He Holds the Keys"... quite a production number. I saw them both in concert twice.
Later as a keyboardist, I never tired of listening to the intro of Michael W. Smith's "The Throne" from the Eye to Eye album. Always liked the funky sounds of Providence from the same album. Guess that album is one of my all time favorites.
I haven't found much equivalent to this stuff today, so like you Patrick, I don't listen to much current Christian music.
Please don't take this as a ringing endorsement of the entire genre, but I actually listened to Christian music BEFORE I started following Jesus.
I've always loved music and God used the spiritual themes of bands like Petra and Stryper to draw me towards him while I was very early in my search for faith.
After becoming a Christian I went through that (regrettable) phase where I divested myself of all of my "secular" music.
I listened to/owned all of the stuff Patrick mentioned. A couple of 80's favs that he missed: SHOUT (a big haired electric guitar duo), and Geoff Moore & The Distance.
Rich Mullins and The Choir were probably the most enduring for me of that era. I still dial them up on my ipod occasionally.
I totally had my picture taken with Geoff Moore.
Reading these blogs took me down memory road. I too was a big Christian music fan, but further back to the 70's. I think my first Christian music festival was the 2nd Ichthus festival. The first Christian music that I remember was Larry Norman. I met him in the late 80’s at Cornerstone Christian Music festival near Chicago and he autographed my CD. I cooked a ham for a dinner with Phil Keggy (what a guitar player!) and his band when they came to Lexington one time. It was my first time at cooking a ham and I thought I had burned it when I saw smoke coming out of the kitchen. It was only the drippings burning. Good thing as I did not have time to cook another ham!
A few artists from the 80’s and early 90’s that are not mentioned that I really enjoyed are Degarmo and Key, Mylon LeFevre and Broken Heart, and Kerry Livgren (any Kansas fans?) Probably the most spiritually moved that I have ever been at a concert was Charlie Peacock at Cornerstone. I still get cold chills when I think about that night.
Christian music was a big part of my Christian walk. It was a great way to talk to others about their faith. Now I’m more in to reading, thought I still enjoy Christian music. I hope that is not a sign that I am getting old. I don’t feel old!
Patrick, I still have a Lost Dogs t-shirt!
